Combining the word parts for gymno (nude, naked, bare) and -sophy (doctrine), gymnosophy was the doctrine of a sect of Hindus or Jains who did not believe in wearing clothes, in part to avoid having caste marks. The gymnosophists, who apparently existed up until about 1000 AD, practiced nudity, asceticism and meditation.
