East Lothian, Scotland

Town approximately thirty kilometres east of Scotland's capital, Edinburgh, straddling the River Tyne.

One of Scotland's first Royal burghs, created in the early twelth century. Still standing, although only recently repaired after being in near ruins for nearly four houndred years, is the fourteenth century Church of Saint Mary. The Nungate Bridge is the oldest in Scotland, first mentioned in records in 1292.

Haddington stands on the main route from England, and throughout history has regularly been devastated by fighting, or the overflowing of the River Tyne. Although now a very small township, at one time Haddington was the fourth largest town in Scotland, behind Aberdeen, Dundee and Edinburgh.

Famous (or semi-famous) people born in Haddington include John Knox, and Jane Carlyle, wife of Thomas Carlyle.
