Joliet is a Microsoft extension to the ISO 9660 filesystem that allows Unicode characters to be used in filenames. This is a benefit when handling internationalization. Like the Rock Ridge extensions, Joliet also allows long filenames.

Joliet handles long filenames up to 64 characters, as opposed to Romeo's 128. However, Joliet maintains backwards compatibility with DOS (and thus, any hardware or operating system that can read DOS FAT filesystems, such as Macintoshes). It does this by storing two filelists. One contains the long filenames, and the other contains standard 8.3 filenames that are formed by truncating the long filename and adding a tilde and number to it.
