The first track off
McLusky's fantastic 2002 album
McLusky Do Dallas, it was also the first single from the album. Released on the
12th of November, 2001 by
Too Pure records on a
7", it was a promising sign for the new album and illustrated beautifully how the
Welsh three-piece had learned to harness the energy that was apparent on their debut album; 2000's
My Pain And Sadness Is More Sad and Painful Than Yours. The
B-Side was a song called
No Covers.
Definitely one of the most
explosive songs on the album, and clocking in at barely over a minute fifty, the song opens with a fast
hi-hat quarter note beat by
drummer
Matthew Harding, before
Andrew Falkous' manic vocals come in, sounding for all the world like a cross between
Mike D of the
Beastie Boys and
Jello Biafra on speed. Falkous spits out the words with plenty of venom and a nervous twitch, while
Jonathan Chapple's quiet but present bass remains the eye of the storm, keep the group together through Falkous'
guitar and
vocal frenzy. To credit the band, the song is very ordered and level, despite any hint of sloppiness given off by the intense lyrical delivery. As typical with
Steve Albini's production, the guitar, vocals, and drums are at the front of the mix, but all the instruments sound extremely clean and are easy to hear (obviously, the distortion present is that put on by the band with the amps and pedals).
Lyrically, McLusky show their love of
sex and childish humour, while also demonstrating that they've grown up a little and painting some good images
to boot. It's easy to imagine Falkous standing at the scene of the crime with a gun while assuring us unconvincingly that he didn't do it, yet we can't help but agree with him in his excitement. During the first two
verses, only the roll on the hi-hats is audible while Falkous sings, with a half bar of intense music accented three times after every line. Chapple provides backing vocals for the "Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues" in each verse. The last verse is sung on the borderline of a breakdown, with the Harding playing a very fast (almost
metal)
kick and
snare drum combination in addition to the hi-hats.
LIGHTSABRE COCKSUCKING BLUES
Eat what you want while you're falling apart and it opened a
can of worms
The gun's in my hand and I know it looks bad but believe me
I'm innocent
I'm fearful, I'm fearful, I'm
fearful of flying
And flying's fearful of me
I covered my eyes when she told me the news,
Turning me on with my Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Nicotine stains on account of her
crotch* and I'm aching from fucking too much
I know what to do but it all comes to you did you sell me to
wanderlust?
I'm fearful, I'm fearful, I'm fearful of flying
And flying's fearful of me
I covered my eyes when she told me the news,
Turning me on with my Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Are you coming?
Eat what you want while you're falling apart and it opened a can of worms
The
gun's in my hand and I know it looks bad but believe my I'm
innocent
I'm
fearful, I'm fearful, I'm fearful of flying
And flying is fearful of me
I covered my eyes when she told me the news,
Turning me on with my
Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues.
