In the Discworld novels of Terry Pratchett Corporal Nobbs (Nobby) of the Night Watch(the city's police force) is an unprepossessing individual, who has to carry a card from The Patrician of Ankh-Morpork to confirm his status as a human.
In the earlier Watch novels, Nobby was a basically a petty criminal, but under the good influence of Corporal Carrot has largely abandoned this behaviour.
Nobby is rumored to be the last surviving descendent of the Earl of Ankh, and in later novels has been trying (and failing) to discover his sexuality
