Back in the dark ages, computers used to use composite video to display color images on a monitor. This worked, but not very well; characters would have colored fringes around them and the image would sometimes look disgusting. The brilliant solution was to keep the red, green, and blue signals separate in the path from computer to monitor, allowing very nice looking full color images, like on the Apple IIgs. All modern monitors are RGB.
