RLL is an acronym for Run Length Limited. The RLL coding scheme is a method of encoding more than one bit of information per flux reversal in magnetic media. This compression technique allowed an approximate 50% increase in straight MFM drive capacities. Note that the drive had to be RLL capable. Hard drives with the RLL system had a transfer rate of a blazing 7.5 Megabits per second over an ST412 interface.
