In a saucepan, gradually stir one pound of granulated sugar into thirteen ounces of hot water to make sixteen ounces of simple syrup. A variety of drinks (mixed or not) call for sweetening to offset the tartness of some juices used in their recipes. Granulated sugar does not dissolve easily in cold drinks, but this simple sugar syrup, being liquid, is the perfect alternative.

Sugar water. To make small batches, mix one ounce hot water with one ounce sugar, stirring until sugar has dissolved. Useful for making fresh squeezed juice drinks, like lemonade or limeade.
