The Roaches is the name of a
gritstone crag located in
the
Peak District about halfway between
Leek and
Buxton in
Staffordshire, England. There is a long
history of
rock climbing there, and the rock is known as
some of the roughest grit going.
Classic routes such as Valkyrie and Sloth might have a
queue during spells of good weather, but there is a lot of
less busy rock nearby, including Ramshaw Rocks, Hen Cloud
and the Five Clouds There is masses of bouldering
potential here, so bring your crash mat
If you are driving into the area then parking can be
difficult if everyone has had the same idea that
weekend. There is also a campsite nearby. Facilities are
basic, just a tap in a field and only a quid a night last
time I looked. Breakfast available at the Roaches Tea
Room over the road and . Night-time activities include
decent pub food at the Rock Inn, and even a pool table.
