The Sky of Arda

Eä, the universe was created when Ilúvatar spoke the word Eä!, which is Be!.

To prepare for the coming of the Children of Ilúvatar, the Vala Varda placed many stars in the sky of Arda:

• Borgil- The bright red star in the constellation Menelmacar. Corresponds closely to Betelgeuse.
• Carnil- A small red star.
• Helluin- A blue star which is acknowledged as today's Sirius.
• Isil / Ithil / Rána- The Moon, created from the last flower of the tree Telperion.
• Menelmacar / Telumehtar / Menelvagor - A constellation of stars identified as today's Orion.
• Remmirath- A cluster of stars equivalent to today's Pleiades.
• Soronúmë- The Eagle of the West, a constellation created with the dews of the tree Telperion. The name suggests it is equivalent to Aquila.
• The Wain- The constellation identified with today's Big Dipper
