On July 1, 2002, the school changed its name to McDaniel College. The announcement of the change had been made in January 2002, and the college did a lot of scrambling to soothe disgruntled alumni who opposed the change. The board of trustees had already decided to go ahead before they ever made their announcement, and the new name, in honor of William Roberts McDaniel, was selected and announced in April 2002.
