- AFK: Away From Keyboard
A player who does not type or use the mouse for a five minutes is automatically flagged as AFK. Staying in this state for too long will result in the player being logged out.
- DND: Do Not Disturb
A player can flag himself as DND, which has no effect other than to insert DND before the character’s name in the label above their head and in chat. Other players are expected to respect this.
- EQ: Everquest
Another popular massively multiplayer game, and one which many Warcraft players currently or formerly played. The general attitude is one of superiority towards “Evercrack” players.
- GM: Game Master
A Blizzard employee tasked with observing players, enforcing Blizzard’s Terms of Service and responding to help requests from players. GMs wear special outfits. GM abuse is one of the more serious accusations that a player can make, and Blizzard does not take it lightly.
- MT: Mistell
A mistell is when a player accidentally sends a message to the wrong player or chat channel. Simply saying “MT” is used to explain a statement that a player made in chat, usually nonsensical or offensive.
- NPC: Non Player Character
Strictly, an NPC is any entity that is controlled by the computer, and not by a player. However, it has come to mean friendly computer-controlled entities: townsfolk, vendors, leaders, and the like.
