Character Etymology:

The radical at left represents road/movement while the radical at right is a compound of the inversion of the radical for foot and the short version of thread. The inverted foot signifies abnormal movement while the short version of thread acts phonectically to express the sound "go" but also lends its meaning of little: thus, to make (abnormally) little progress, indicating delay and by extension coming after/behind.

A lesser scoring goal in Winchester College football. A behind only scores one point as apposed to three for a goal. When a behind is scored the scorer's name is not recorded, as it is not judged to be his alone. Behinds usually result from sloppy, slow play where there is a struggle near the line.

A behind is scored if:

  • The ball goes over worms whilst in ropes
  • The ball goes off an opposing player before crossing the line.
  • The ball is driven over worms in the hot.

Incidentally, or perhaps not there is also a behind in Australian Rules football, which scores one point to a goal's six. This is scored by getting the ball in between two posts that are further out from the main goalposts.
