Verandah is the Australian term for porch, being the extended part of a house, covered by the roof but open to the weather on all sides. Australians don't use the word porch -- the verandah (ver-RAN-dah) is the place to be on warm summer evenings.

break tells me that verandah in Finnish is "veranta".

This term is also used in the United States, especially the South. Tennessee Williams made great use of this term in his drama. It was often a place where women conversed with men, with supervision, of course. In the mint julep world of southerners, it is pronounced as:
