  One of the biggest characters in 20th Century physics, Feynman worked mainly on particle interactions.

  Laid the groundwork for Newton's Laws of Motion; also refined the telescope, and was the first to use it for astronomy.

  Nobel Laureate in the field of sub-atomic physics.
• Otto von Guericke
  Famous for devising the Magdeburg Experiment.
• Stephen Hawking
  Most famous for his book, A Brief History Of Time, and his ground-breaking work on black holes, despite suffering from motor neurone disease.
• Oliver Heaviside
  Simplifier of Maxwell's equations and all-around eccentric.
• Werner Heisenberg
  Author of the famous uncertainty principle, and one of the leading lights of early 20th century physics.
• Joseph Henry
  American physicist who worked on electromagnetism.
• Robert Hooke
  Contemporary and rival of Newton, who did important early work in microscopy and formulated Hooke's Law to describe elastic solids.
• Fred Hoyle
  Astrophysicist who coined the term 'Big Bang' for a theory he always disagreed with.
• Frédéric Joliot-Curie
  Distinguished nuclear physicist, resistance leader and war hero, though his Nobel Prize was in Chemistry.
• Theodore von Karman
  Engineer and physicist who worked on fluid dynamics and aeronautics.
• Lord Kelvin
  Pioneer in thermodynamics, creator of the Kelvin scale of absolute temperature, and an inventor.

  Theoretical physicist whose Lorentz transformations are the heart of special relativity.

  Experimental physicist remembered in the Mach Number system and Mach's Principle (although the latter was originally due to George Berkeley).

  British physicist who discovered the electromagnetic radiation moves in waves.

  Co-discoverer of nuclear fission.
• Albert Abraham Michelson
  Co-designer of the Michelson-Morley experiment, which effectively showed that light is not transmitted by ether and always travels at the same speed through a vacuum - realisations which paved the way for special relativity.
• Robert Andrews Millikan
  Showed that the charge on the electron is quantised and constant; also verified the existence of the photoelectric effect and measured Planck's constant.
• Hermann Minkowski
  Who suggested to Einstein that special relativity might best be understood from the point of view of four-dimensional geometry, an insight which made general relativity possible.
• Isaac Newton
  One of the greatest minds of all time, Newton's Laws of Motion laid the basis for all mechanics that followed.
• J. Robert Oppenheimer
  Known as "The Father of the atomic bomb", Oppenheimer also worked on sub-atomic physics.

  Nobel prize winner, Pauli introduced the idea of the neutrino.

  Mathematician and theoretical physicist who did a lot of work with Stephen Hawking.

  German physicist who opened the Pandora's Box of quantum mechanics.

  Discovered nuclear magnetic resonance, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1952; the wide- ranging applications of his discovery include the MRI scanner and modern radio astronomy.
• Ernest Rutherford
  Who was the first to realise the atom consisted of a solid nucleus surrounded by mostly 'empty' space.
• Ole Christensen Rømer
  Danish physicist, determined the speed of light.
• Wilhelm Röntgen
  German Nobel prize winner, Röntgen was the first to notice the phenomenon of X-rays.
• Andrei Sakharov
  Russian physicist attributed with the creation of the fist soviet atomic weapons.
• Erwin Schrödinger
  Famous German physicist who disliked cats.
• Nikola Tesla
  Brilliant, eccentric mathematician, physicist and inventor responsible for alternating current power transmission, fluorescent lights and a dazzling array of other inventions we take for granted.

  Inventor of the first barometer, Torricelli was greatly inspired by Galileo, with whom he lived for three months until Galileo's death.
