This is a grassland preserve in the
Sacramento Valley near the
Delta; one of the few remaining open
grasslands in the whole valley. It and its adjoining fish and game lands cover quite a
large area and are known for their abundance of
native grasses,
vernal pools supporting rare plants and
waterfowl, and
wetland areas. Some non-native grasses such as
Medusa-Head have invaded the area and are managed via several experimental techniques including sustainable grazing and
prescribed burns. Research here benefits reserves elsewhere as well as
ranchers throughout the state.
The reserve can be found by going south on highway 113 from highway 80 in Dixon, until it hits a 90 degree turn. If you go straight down the dirt road instead of turning with the highway, you will find the area.
