The Beanpot is an annual ice hockey tournament between
Boston College,
Boston University,
Northeastern, and
Harvard. First competed for in 1952, the Beanpot is perhaps the biggest event in
New England college sports. With the exception of the
Frozen Four, it's the most publicized collegiate
ice hockey event of the year, and is a source of perennial pride (and shame) for the winners (and losers). The measure of a team's season often depends on winning the Beanpot -- a
National Championship is great, but without the Beanpot, a black mark exists on an otherwise outstanding season.
The tournament is a single elimination affair held over two days at the FleetCenter (formerly at the Boston Garden). Winners of the first day's games square off two nights later in the championship game, while the losers play a consolation game. After all is said and done, the winner carries home a silver bowl trophy and tacks some more text onto the Beanpot banner hanging over their home ice.
Although the Beanpot originated as a hockey tournament, it has since been extended to additional sports, such as women's golf and baseball, and additional teams have been invited, like Holy Cross and UMass-Amherst. But the true Beanpot is still played on ice by the four teams that started it all.
