At 22,841 feet,
Aconcagua is the highest point in the
Western Hemisphere. As such, it is one of "
The Seven Summits". Located in
Argentina, it is part of the
Andes mountain range.
The first ascent of Aconcagua was made in 1896-1897 by an English expedition. It was done via the route now known as the Normal Route. This is a non-technical ascent. In 1934, a Polish expedition succeeded in reaching the summit by climbing a glacier which has become known as the Polish Glacier and their route -- the most popular technical route -- is now known as the Polish Glacier Route.
