Calista Flockhart was born in Freeport, Illinois on November 11, 1964. She is the daughter of former Kraft Foods business executive Ronald Flockhart and teacher Kay Flockhart (also the sister of Gary Flockhart). Because of her father's job, the family moved frequently, spending time in Iowa, Minnesota, and New York before settling in New Jersey. She has dark blonde hair, brown eyes and is 5'6" tall. Her education includes graduating from Shawnee High School and later in 1987 earning a B.A. in Fine Arts (Theatre) at Rutgers University. After graduating, she headed to Manhattan to begin her professional stage career.

The actress got her big break when she was chosen to play Laura in the 1994 Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie. Her portrayal won her both a Theatre World Award and a Clarence Derwent Award. That same year she made her film debut with a part in Quiz Show. She is most known as the star of Ally McBeal which enabled her to land solid roles in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her.

She has adopted Liam Flockhart who was born January 1, 2001 in San Diego and has a dog (terrier) named Webster. There has been much attention on Calista's weight and rumours float around that she has an eating disorder. Calista has denied these allegations.
