Since the construction of the Rose Bowl stadium, the game itself has been played there every year but one. In 1942, the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor less than a month earlier raised fears that a massive spectator event on the West Coast might be similarly subject to attack by the Japanese. The game, therefore, was moved across the country to Duke Stadium (now Wallace Wade Stadium), then a relatively new facility, at Duke University in Durham, NC, where the homestanding Blue Devils lost to Oregon State 20-16.
