Pussy-cat Mew jumped over a
coal,
And in her best
petticoat burnt a great
hole.
Poor Pussy's weeping, she'll have no more
milk
Until her best petticoat's mended with
silk.
From The Real Mother Goose
A thorough web-search brought about no mutations of this rhyme, and it does not generally seem to be very well known. However, it was familiar enough for a certain
E. H. Knatchbull-Hugessen to make a fairytale inspired by it, called Puss-Cat Mew, published in 1871. More than this I cannot tell, alas. Except, of course - Kids! Don't dress your kittens up in silk underwear when there is hot coal around!
