Indian city formerly known as
Calcutta, offically changed its name to the
Bengali version as year
2001 started.
The city is the capital of the state West Bengal and also a former British India capital. In 1911 New Delhi was made capital by the British, and remained so after independence in 1947.
Located on the river Ganges, it is a major trade, industrial, cultural and educational center. More than 11,000,000 live in the metropolitan area (1985)
