A game played on a board.

The board is a representation of the public state of the game, formed by placing movable pieces, often called tokens or pawns, on it. There are essentially three basic types of board game, with most being a mixture of these types:

  • Games where the board contains the entire state of the game. This includes such games as chess and checkers.
  • Games where the board is visible to all, but the other information is visible to only a certain player. Scrabble, with each player's rack of tiles hidden, and Risk, with the identities of each player's cards hidden, are examples of this type of game.
  • Games which supplement the board with other visible information. Monopoly has a lot of such information: the properties owned by each player, (among the people I play with, at least) the pile of money each person has, and the number rolled on the dice.

Board games fall across all genres, from pure strategy games such as chess, checkers, and go, to classic family games such as Life, Monopoly, and Clue. Other popular board games include Parcheesi, Trivial Pursuit, and Backgammon, and more obscure ones abound.
