Launched by former
Daily Telegraph journalist Andreas Whittam-Smith in 1986 after
the Times was seen to drop its politically-independent line in support of
Margaret Thatcher and lose its position as Britain's paper of record. Only quality daily launch in the
UK in the twentieth century, made possible by the advent of
desktop publishing.
Also Independent on Sunday, sister paper to the Independent since 1990.
