When
shares are traded
cum dividend, the shares carry the right to the next
dividend payment. This means that the
buyer is entitled to receive the dividend declared.
“cum” means with.
The date on which this right to the dividend expires is known as the ex date. The share are then traded ex dividend, even though the actual dividend payment has not been made.
