Somerset County, located in Central New Jersey, is home to an estimated 309,886 residents and covers 305.5 square miles. It was established on May 22, 1688. Although its population density is 1,014.36 persons per square mile, there are still some large expanses of farmland and protected wilderness in Somerset County. The county, home to a large upper middle class, is one of the richest counties in the United States. A recent IRS tally has put Somerset fourth in the nation in average adjusted gross income, at $96,307, and first in median household income, at $88,957. The county is the location of many corporate headquarters, such as AT&T. Not every part of it is affluent, however. The averages are so high largely because a couple towns, like Far Hills, are so rich. Other towns are more working class. Somerset County is 79.3% white, 8.4% Asian, 7.5% Black, 0.1% Native American, and 2.7% other races. The Hispanic population (which includes any race) is 8.7%.
