Meow is just an older and slightly less high pitched Mew designed to communicate in slightly stronger terms than a Mew can.

An absotively posilutely adorable sound made by felines. Upon hearing one I could just melt... Felines meow to communicate with humans. In the wild, cats don't meow; they use body language and scent to communicate with each other. Domestic cats meow because they learn at an early age that this is the best way to get the attention of their slaves-- err, I mean owners.

A form of Usenet Performance Art begun in January, 1996, when a bunch of weenies from harvard, who lived in alt.fan.karl-malden.nose tried to invade alt.tv.beavis-n-butthead. One of the haavaad weenies, Matt Bruce, made a post that went "Meow meow Henrietta Pussycat meow meow meow The Presidents of the United States of America meow Kitty," earning him immediate flamage. And thus, meows began flowing to alt.hell and back, until it made a lot of people very angry, and ISPs began instituting draconian Acceptable Use Policies.

Meow still lives to this day, with alt.fan.karl-malden.nose as its hub of activity. Anyone is invited to meow, but must be prepared to be laughed at if they use a crappy newsreader.

The meow sound commonly heard by humans is the combination of the 'me' sound and the 'ow' sound that cats make. The first part generally meaning "I'll be friendly" and the second part "keep your distance". Other sounds cats have a tendency of making for communication are purring and growling.
