The largest
castle in
England and still an official Royal residence. The castle is situated on the banks of the
River Thames at
Windsor,
Berkshire, west of
London. It was founded by
William the Conqueror in the
11th Century and first used as a royal residence by
Henry I 50 years later. In the
16th Century it was upgraded from a
fotress to a
palatial castle.
In 1992 large parts of the castle were badly damaged by a fire and was closed for nearly 5 years. The rooms are furnished with some of the most important works of art in the Queen's private collection, including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and van Dyck amongst others. St. George's Chapel within the castle grounds is the final resting place of 10 British monarchs.
