A place containing an organized collection of written, artistic, or other kinds of materials. The real beauty of libraries are that they are utterly convivial. You don't need to be anyone special, nor must you pay money to use the library. I was amazed when I went to the Library of Congress that no one checked my ID.

The earliest known library was a collection of clay tablets in Babylonia in the 21st cent. B.C., first public library in Greece was established in order to preserve accurate examples of the works of the great dramatists. This was recently destroyed in the Iraq War of 2003.

The Boston Public Library opened in 1653 and was followed by the Library Company of Philadelphia in 1731, a circulating library. First U.S. tax-supported library opened in Peterborough, NH, 1833.
