Thomas Stamford Raffles (person)

Raffles has had quite the posthumous treatment here in the small island of Singapore, with close to a hundred firms, buildings and roads named after him.

• The Singapore History Museum was once known as the Raffles Library and Museum, located on Stamford Road, which is also named after him.
• One of its top schools, the Raffles Institution soon spawned the Raffles Girls' School and the Raffles Junior College all top schools in their own field.
• The two main areas in the business district are called Raffles City (the commercial area), and Raffles Place (the financial and business hub).
• One of the largest lodging management groups is Raffles Holding, which owns the tallest building in Singapore, Swissotel: The Stamford.
Ironically, the oldest hotel is the Raffles Hotel, famous for the Singapore Sling.

And yet, despite all that, only a very small group of people know that his full name is Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles.
