Michigan has a 10
cent bottle
deposit.
When each can or bottle is worth 10 cents at a local store or supermarket, you tend to not throw them away nearly as often - in fact, you very rarely see litter in the form of bottles or cans. It is very effective in controlling litter, though when $2.40 is added to a case of pop, it is rather annoying.
After growing up there, it was really tough for me at college, where they didn't have can recycling for the first year I was there - it was next to impossible for me to actually throw them in the trash.
I am in favor of a national bottle deposit.
