This depends on the nature of the enemy. If one is facing an enemy bent upon your destruction, this method will be unsuccessful. This is why nonviolence could never have worked for the Jews against the Nazis. The British did not, generally, want to destroy the Indians, just as white Americans did not, generally, want to destroy black Americans during the Civil Rights era. War and violence is not always a bad option. Sometimes avoiding war or eschewing violent resistance will lead to a worse result than engaging the enemy militarily.
