Calories described as "empty" (or sometimes "naked") are those that give the human body energy, but otherwise have negligible nutritional value. The most common foods that contain empty calories are table sugar and ethanol, the sort of alcohol found in beer, wine, and spirits. Foods and drinks such as candy bars and tequila are said to have empty calories because, while they provide energy (which can either be used up or stored eventually as fat), they are lacking in many other nutritional factors. A healthy diet limits the intake of foods with empty calories.
