Horror movie released in 1978. Second in
George Romero's trilogy
which began with
Night of the Living Dead.
Taking place some time after the original movie, it tells the tale
of four humans seeking sanctuary in the midst of a world turned
upside down. The world is overrun with flesh-eating zombies and
two police officers, friends and members of a SWAT unit, along with
a helicopter pilot, and his girlfriend take refuge in an abandoned
shopping mall, while the world around them falls into anarchy. The
band secures the mall against the intruding zombies and create for
themselves an oasis in the middle of the chaos.
But their security is threatened when a group of bikers break into
the mall, wanting to take the safe haven away from our heroes. The
bikers shatter their peace, also allowing the zombies in as well, with
predictable results.
The movie starred David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott H. Reiniger, and Gaylen
Ross. The special effects were produced by effects master Tom Savini
and are shocking for their time. I still get uncomfortable at the
mental image of a zombie taking a bite out of someone's
shoulder.
The movie spotlights the monsterous nature of human beings when placed
outside the limits imposed on them by society. Though surrounded
by legions of walking corpses intent on eating them, it is the threat
posed by other humans, greedy for that which others have that is
the true evil in the movie.
